Joy of Art! Juried Exhibition

Hospital for Special Care's Joy of Art! Art Exhibition will feature the works of community artists. Our Juried Exhibitions mean to celebrate the diversity and beauty of art and its creators. All 2D works in the following media: oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, mixed media, pen and ink, drawing or graphics, and photography are eligible for consideration.
Submit your artwork by May 30, 2024.
Opening Reception
June 26, 2024, at 5:00 pm
This year's reception will take place in person as a part of the Hospital for Special Care Annual Donor Appreciation Reception at the Bristol Event Center. Artists are invited to attend with guests. Artwork will be available for in-person viewing at the reception via a digital art installation.
Following the reception, the exhibit will be available for viewing and purchasing online. The pieces will hang at the Hospital for Special Care to be appreciated by staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors for the remainder of the exhibition.

A portion of each sale will support Hospital for Special Care's Joy of Art! program. Purchasers will need to pick up the piece(s) at Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT at the end of the exhibit.
Meet the Honorary Jurors
Brett Abbot, Director and CEO
New Britain Museum of American Art
A specialist in American photography of the 20th and 21st centuries, he has organized more than 30 exhibitions and contributed to more than a dozen publications in the field. Prior to his appointment in New Britain, Abbott was Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, where he provided leadership for the Museum's curatorial, conservation, registration, archives, art services, exhibitions, and publication programs. He envisioned and spearheaded the Carter's major 2019 renovation and reinstallation, which rebuilt mechanical infrastructure within the Philip Johnson buildings, added vault space, enhanced public accessibility, and established state-of-the-art galleries customized for the display of the collection. Before the Carter, he served in curatorial roles at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His honors include the 2012 Ansel Adams Fellowship from the Center for Creative Photography for his research on Wynn Bullock, the 2010 Lucie Award for Curator of the Year for the exhibition Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties, and the 2007 Lucie Award for Curator of the Year for his work on Edward Weston. Abbott is a graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute's Executive Education Program for Museum Leaders. He earned his Master of Arts from Williams College and his BA from Stanford University.
Woon Choi and Dr. Adrian Chan
Painter, Sculptor, Ceramic Artist
Woon is a New York-based Korean American artist who studied Traditional Korean Sumi ink painting, and Royal Joseon Porcelain ceramics with National Korean masters in Seoul, Korea. She received her BFA in Korean ink painting, ceramics, sculpture, and design in art education at Kong Ju National University in South Korea. She studied traditional Chinese painting with Chinese Master painters in Toronto Canada. Woon taught Korean Sumi ink painting and ceramics at schools and has had oriental painting group shows in South Korea.
She also studied New York abstract expressionism painting and contemporary portrait and figurative painting with master artists at the Art Students League of NY. Her ceramic works with sumi calligraphy were twice selected out of 100 artists in Tokyo and NY. She received awards in abstract oil paintings and drawing at the Art Students League of NY annual competitions, and at selected art group shows in NYC. She earned her BFA in painting and art history at York College of Pennsylvania. She works and teaches in her studios in NYC and West Hartford, and is a volunteer for patients at HFSC.
Her husband, Dr. Adrian Chan, is the Co-Director of the HFSC Center for Cognitive Health, and the neurologist in HFSC's Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center.
Hospital for Special Care Joy of Art! Program
The Joy of Art! program hosts exhibitions throughout the year and supports art groups and activities that helps patients feel engaged with the community. Art is integrated into patient care, providing holistic patient-centered healing. We believe art is an important factor in rebuilding lives. Patients get the opportunity to express their emotions through creativity, stimulate their minds and feel joy during their hospital stay.
